New Work

I will be showing some new pieces at Drink Philly’s First Friday on July, 1st. So in honor of it being Independence Day Weekend, I will having my drunken founding fathers and these new pieces below.

First up is Independence Hall.

And next is Boat House Row.  I love Philly and its architecture.

This is how the series looks when completed:

I

And a new addition to my drunken Founding Fathers: Paul Revere!

Not alot of people know about how Paul Revere’s ride really went.  The historian Charles Taussig says that Revere was on his way to warn Samuel Adams and John Hancock about the British soldiers arriving on the shore, but he managed to stop for a drink and by the time he got back on his horse, was very very drunk.  He was stopped by Red Coats for drunken disorderly conduct.  What really awoke Adams and Hancock was Revere’s drunken disruption, not the calls of “The British are Coming”.

And lastly, Thomas Jefferson, who was a wine fanatic.

“Good wine is a necessity of life for me. I double the doctor’s recommendation of a glass and a half of wine each day and even treble it with a friend.”

~ Thomas Jefferson

Here is the cover illustration for my second book-

Harry Hiccers: Friends of a Feather

Birthday!

Today is my birthday.  It also happens to be my twin sister’s birthday by some freak coincidence.  In celebration I drew her this card, on paper tablecloth, at a restaurant, with crayons.  It was too good to leave there, so I tore it free and handed it to her.  I’m very curious as to what the bust boy must have thought when he saw a big hole in the paper.

So Trish, Happy 24th Birthday, and here’s to many many more before you croak.

George Washington

The 2nd piece for my Founding Fathers of Alcohol series.

George Washington used to make his own whiskey.  He had his own distillery at Mount Vernon.  It was one of the most successful ones in Colonial times.  He even bought alcohol for every voter in his district.

Character designs

Tonight has been a busy night for doing some sketches.  The office was doing a contest for designing superheroes, and the first image was my submission.  The second was a quick drawing I did for a co-worker of her niece.

And if all goes as planned I’ll be updating this coming week with alot more of my  recent work.

Painting

I haven’t touched watercolors since 2008… But I accepted a commission from a co-worker to create a painting of her house for Christmas.

I have to admit, I impressed myself.

First Friday

The Drink Philly show was a success!  I was amazed at the turn out, and Justin and Adam did a great job putting everything together.

Above are some pictures from last night, including the random Star Wars Battle that took place at 2nd and Chestnut.

I am so excited for this coming First Friday in Philadelphia, because for the first time I will be having my pieces hanging!

This is my last two pieces for the show, and I can’t wait to see how everything looks together.

The first is my Ironic Mustache piece.  This hipster is a mix between 3 of my illustrator friends; Robbie Byerly, Mark Fionda, and Lawrence Burns. I wouldn’t consider any of them hipsters, but Robbie was the one that introduced me to the phrase Ironic Mustache, Fionda has the best mustache I’ve ever seen and I thought of him as I was adding the pigeons, and Lawrence is the one to introduce me to PBR.  This piece was definitely a collaboration of ideas, with two other illustrator friends Millie Landis and Jeremy Goodfellow.  I love having such creative and inspiring friends that we can bounce ideas off each other, and know how to make a piece better.

The second piece is the Philadelphia Skyline, with the current night sky map above.  One thing from living out in the country I missed when I moved to the city was stars.  The only constellation I could ever make out was Orion’s belt.  I wanted to show what is being hidden behind all those city lights.
